In 1923 a pawnbroker was gunned down in Greensboro, by North Carolina's most infamous Depression Era Gangster, Otto Wood. Living on the fray of society has been a very familiar facet of Otto Wood's life. At the age of seven, when most children are afraid of the dark, Wood was hopping his first train to West Virginia to stay with his kinfolk the Hatfield's.....the very Hatfield's engaged in history's bloodiest feud with the McCoy family. There Otto would learn the "skills of the trade" bootlegging, armed robbery, and possibly even murder. Between the time of Wood hopping his first train and the ruthless slaying of the pawnbroker, Wood would be arrested seven times in West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina, and all seven times Wood would somehow miraculously escape his jail cell. Wood was finally convicted of second-degree murder (for the pawnbroker slaying), and sentenced to thirty years in Central Prison located in Raleigh, North Carolina. During his time there Wood escaped four times and composed an autobiography about his life and criminal career. During his time out of prison, after his final escape, Wood was spotted by Police in Salisbury, North Carolina, on December 31, 1930. Authorities approached Wood unaware that he was armed and as they approached he began firing a weapon at Police Officers. At some point, amidst the hail of gunfire Otto Wood was killed, but a legend was born.
